OCR: TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN There is a story from around the turn of the century, attrib- uted to either Bertrand Russell or William James, that gives an amusing version of how the world is ordered. During a lecture on astronomy, Russell (or James) began to talk in a very elementary way about how the earth revolves around the sun, and the sun's place as a star in our galaxy. At the end of his lecture, an old lady stood up and shook her finger at him. "What you have told us here today is pure rubbish!" she said. "The world is a large flat plate, resting on the back of a turtle." Russell (or James) decided to go along with the woman for a moment and asked, "If that is so, then what is the turtle stand- ing on?" "You're very clever, young man," she retorted, "But it's turtles -all the way down!"
